It is with great pride that I introduce you to the Garcia Brothers Latin Jazz Band.  It doesn't seem that long ago, back in 1979, when Raul, Rudy and Robert first showed up at my gigs, and later at some of my rehearsals, full of interest and questions about the music we call Latin jazz.  And now, in 1994, a debut CD of all original material very worthy of this still-evolving musical tradition, executed with that special "family feeling."

For the brothers grew up in a very musical family, receiving their earliest musical training from their father and going on together to play a variety of different music throughout the Los Angeles area.  After I became acquainted with them in 1979, it was a pleasure to steer them toward the influences which have played such an important role in my musical development, such as Mongo Santamaria, Cal Tjader, Tito Puente and many others.  We became friends, we exchanged musical ideas, kept in touch and, eventually, I helped them put their Latin jazz band together and shared with them some of the arrangements from my own book.

Getting some help is one thing but you don't become a success without putting the time in and being willing to do whatever it takes to be heard.  The brothers are doing it, fortunately with band members who bring to this musical idiom great talent, knowledge and dedication.  Because I have had my own musical brothers, Ramon and Tony Banda, who I grew up with, playing with me for so many years, I have always associated with this music a family or "brotherhood" feeling.  The Garcia Brothers have a real advantage here because they are family and the feeling really comes through on this recording.

Latin Jazz has enjoyed a steady increase in popularity all over the world which I have been privileged to witness first hand.   This recording will expose the Brothers to this growing audience and will stand as further proof that good, swinging Latin jazz can excite the dancers and jazz aficionados alike.  Enjoy!
