Johnny Martnez

Johnny Martinez

Johnny Martnez started his musical career working with the great bands of Louis Alcaraz, Xavier Cugat, Tito Puente, Perez Prado, Chuey Reyes, Ciela Cruz, Noro Morales, Tito Rodriguez, Carmen Cavallero, Migalito Valdez and many others.

One of the most respected orchestra leaders in Latin music for the past 35+ years, Johnny Martnez and his Orchestra have completed two world tours and visited 42 states.   Since 1959, Johnny has played every major venue in Los Angeles from the Coconut Grove to the Hollywood Palladium and recorded albums for R.C.A., Liberty, Columbia, Decca, Tropicana, Fiesta, Musimex/Sono Tropic and Capitol Records.

Johnny has received more than 50 awards by major organizations such as Best Salsa Orchestra from the Hispanic Musicians Association to the Excellence in Performing Arts Award from [former] Los Angeles Mayor Tom Bradley.

Johnny used to be called the "Dean of Salsa" but not any more.  At the 1995 Salsa and Samba Festival in Long Beach, California, Johnny accepted a lifetime achievement award bestowing him with the title El Padrino, The Godfather of Salsa.

"A steadfast, major player in the Los Angeles Salsa scene, Johnny's band works almost every night of the week and has for more than 30 years."

- Zan Stewart
