Wayne Henderson is best known as a founding member of the highly successful and influential Jazz Crusaders (who later dropped the Jazz from their name but certainly not their music).
The Crusaders developed a bluesy jazz sound that was able to embrace many of popular styles contemporaneous with the group's history from 1961 to the present. They recorded numerous landmark albums including Street Life, The Second Crusade, Unsung Heroes, Southern Comfort, Chain Reaction, Healing the Wounds and Those Southern Knights.
Their catalogue has become one the most sampled in the world with post-production collaborators that include 2Pac Shakur, Queen Latifah, Ice Cube, Tyrese, Destinys Child, De la Soul, Lil Bow Wow, Blackstreet, Masta Ace, US3 and Dave Hollister.
Henderson left the Crusaders in 1975 and went on to release solo efforts entitled Big Daddys Place, Living On A Dream and Emphasized. He also recorded two LP collaborations with vibraphonist Roy Ayers and has produced abums for Ronnie Laws, Bobby Lyle, Pleasure, Gabor Szabo, Chico Hamilton, Ramsey Lewis, Narada Michael Walden, Mary Wells and Hiroshima.
